I’m excited to announce that I passed the Life in the UK test yesterday! This test is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to settle in the UK and is the first step in my application for Indefinite Leave to Remain. Before I took the test there were a lot of things I was unsure of, including how best to prepare and what happens on the day of the test. I decided to write this post to share my experience in the hope that it would be useful to others in the same situation...

What to expect at your UK Premium Service visa appointment

1 July 2017
image from What to expect at your UK Premium Service visa appointment

If you are switching or extending your visa in the UK you have the option of paying for the Premium Service, where you attend an appointment at a Premium Service Centre to have your application processed. As I explained in my previous post about how to extend your Tier 2 (General) visa, I chose this option because I needed quick processing to avoid interfering with some travel plans I had already made...

It has been three years since I got my Tier 2 (General) visa and since I only got the three year visa the first time I needed to extend it for a further three years. My original post on getting a Tier 2 (General) visa has been my most popular blog post by far so I thought it would be useful to do a follow up post on how to extend this visa if you are continuing to work for the same employer...

How to renew your Australian passport in London

I can’t believe it was ten years ago that I applied for my passport ahead of my first ever trip to Europe. When I was filling in that form I never would have imagined that I’d actually be living in London by the time it expired. Even though I was back in Australia recently, I was only there for a week, so I didn’t feel comfortable submitting an application for my passport renewal only a few days before I was due to fly back to London...

Earlier this year I wrote a post about getting a driver’s licence in the UK and thought I’d follow it up with an explanation of how to get a motorcycle licence. In the UK, the first step in being able to ride a motorcycle or scooter is completing Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) - a training course which upon completion will allow you ride a 125 cc bike for up to 2 years...

Faster entry through UK Passport Control for Australians (and other nationals)

I received a very interesting email today from the UK Home Office (presumably they’ve collected my email address from either my visa application form or the landing cards I have to fill out every time I enter the UK). Border Force have launched a new service called Registered Traveller to give faster and more convenient entry to the UK for nationals from certain countries, including USA, Australia, Japan, Canada and New Zealand...

Getting a UK drivers licence

With my NSW drivers licence approaching its expiry date, I had to make a decision - do I renew it or trade it in for a UK drivers licence? I did some research and found that while you can renew a NSW drivers licence overseas (by filling in a form and having it signed by a witness at the Australian Embassy), they will only deliver your new licence to the address in Australia to which your current licence is registered...

Lost in Translation: An Aussie's Guide to Overcoming the Language Barrier in the UK

The differences between British English and American English are well known, but before I moved to the UK I figured that there would not be much difference between British and Australian English. While this is mostly true, there are some subtle differences that definitely tripped me up a few times! If you’re new to the UK hopefully this guide will stop you making the same mistakes as me. Pants Underwear is referred to as pants in the UK...

The Ultimate Guide to the UK Tier 2 (General) Visa

11 July 2014
image from The Ultimate Guide to the UK Tier 2 (General) Visa

A little over two years ago I came to London on a Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa. The process of applying for this visa was made a lot easier as I had help from a number of sources - I had friends living in London who had already gone through the process of getting this visa, and searching on the Internet helped answer any other questions I had (this guide by the Aussie Nomad was particularly helpful)...
