What’s been happening this month I got my Historic Houses Association membership in December and used it for the first time at Hever Castle. It had been on my list of places I wanted to visit for a long time so I’m glad I’ve finally ticked it off. I visited over the New Years Day bank holiday and they still had their Christmas decorations up. Day trips from London: Bodiam Castle

12 November 2016
image from Day trips from London: Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle was #1 on my National Trust wishlist and I finally got around to visiting over the August bank holiday weekend. This 14th-century moated castle is located near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, less than 2 hours drive from London. We arrived around lunch time so we stopped at the cafe first for some food before walking over to the castle (about a 5 minute walk from the cafe/car park)...

A private viewing of Restormel Castle

We didn’t think we were going to make it in time. Last admission is normally half an hour before closing and we arrived at Restormel Castle about 15 minutes before closing. We were expecting to be turned away but thankfully the lovely English Heritage staff member let us in for a quick visit. There were no other visitors left on the grounds so we had the castle completely to ourselves...

A soggy visit to St Michael's Mount

St Michael’s Mount was one of the places I was most looking forward to visiting on my Cornwall trip, so you can probably imagine how disappointed I was that the weather turned out to be so awful on the day we visited. If you are not familiar with St Michael’s Mount, it’s a small tidal island in Mount’s Bay, home to a working community of local people, as well as an iconic medieval castle...

Chillon Castle Day Trip from Geneva

16 July 2016
image from Chillon Castle Day Trip from Geneva

Chillon Castle was a must-see for me during our recent trip to Gevena and despite the miserable weather I was determined to make it happen. Situated at the opposite end of Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is about an hour outside the city of Geneva but is easy to get via public transport. There are a few different routes you can take to get to the castle: Take a train from Geneva to Lausanne, then change trains to head to Veytaux-Chillon...

Day trips from London: Upnor Castle

image from Day trips from London: Upnor Castle

Upnor Castle has been on my English Heritage wishlist for quite a while so when we had a particularly sunny Saturday a few weeks ago I decided to take advantage of the great weather and finally pay it a visit. Located on the west bank of the River Medway in Kent, you can get to Upnor Castle in under an hour by road from London. It’s also quite close to Rochester Castle, another English Heritage property, so you could easily visit both in one day...

Day trips from London: Rochester Castle

25 January 2016
image from Day trips from London: Rochester Castle

I’ve been itching to get out for a ride on my scooter again but lately the weather just hasn’t been cooperating. We finally had a calm and clear day on Saturday so I took the opportunity to ride to Rochester Castle, about a 40 minute trip from home. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own wheels - you can still get to Rochester via Southeatern trains from St Pancras International...

Things have been a bit quiet on the blog this month. Work has been crazy busy and I’ve just returned from a ski trip in Austria, but I thought I’d get back into the swing of things by wrapping up all the highlights from 2015. I try to write one of these posts every year as I really enjoy looking back on the things I’ve done. Biggest personal achievements On the first day of January 2015, I skied my first ever black run!..

Visiting Highclere Castle (the real-life Downton Abbey)

image from Visiting Highclere Castle (the real-life Downton Abbey)

No doubt you would have heard of the popular British television series Downton Abbey but maybe you didn’t know that you can visit the the real life castle where the show is filmed. Located in Berkshire in south east England, Highclere Castle is home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, whose family have lived on the site since 1679. The author of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, is a longstanding family friend and had Highclere in mind when he was writing the series...

Neuschwanstein: a real life fairytale castle

image from Neuschwanstein: a real life fairytale castle

Neuschwanstein Castle has always been high on my list of places I wanted to visit, right up there with the likes of Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum. It’s one of the world’s most famous castles and was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle. It’s location is quite remote though (about 2 hours out of Munich in southwest Bavaria) so you really need to make a special trip to see it, but it’s definitely worth going out of the way for...
