A look inside Castle Howard, Yorkshire

Whilst staying in the North York Moors National Park for a couple of nights we popped in to visit Castle Howard. This incredible stately home is located just outside the national park, about 15 miles north of York. Despite what the name suggests, Castle Howard is not a true castle. This term is also used for English country houses which were built on the site of a former military castle...

Visiting Caerphilly Castle from Cardiff

If you’re a regular reader of my blog then you probably know that I love a good castle! During my recent trip to Wales I was determined to visit as many castles as possible - they have more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world! The first on my list was Caerphilly Castle, which is easily accessible from Cardiff. Regular trains run between Cardiff and Caerphilly and the journey is about 20 minutes...

Day trips from London: Knole

This historic house in Sevenoaks, Kent had been on my National Trust radar for quite a while. I wasn’t able to visit last year as the house had been closed while a restoration project was taking place but as of March it is once again open to the public. Over the course of the 14-month project urgently needed conservation work was done to paintings, textiles and furniture in the house, and extra rooms have been opened to the public for the first time...

I’m so happy that spring has finally arrived as it means I’m now able to start doing more weekend trips on my scooter. The first of the season was a ride to Dorking in Surrey to visit a couple of National Trust spots - Box Hill and Polesden Lacey. Box Hill is a summit of the North Downs so its a fantastic spot for great scenic walks and stunning views...

Day trips from London: Hever Castle

The winter months are a dull time for exploring historic properties. Most of them close up for the season and I’m fast running out of options for places to visit near London at this time of year. Thankfully Hever Castle was open over the Christmas and New Year period so I jumped at the chance to use my brand new Historic Houses Association membership. Located in the village of Hever in Kent, the castle is about an hour’s drive outside London...

Day trips from London: Bodiam Castle

12 November 2016

Bodiam Castle was #1 on my National Trust wishlist and I finally got around to visiting over the August bank holiday weekend. This 14th-century moated castle is located near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, less than 2 hours drive from London. We arrived around lunch time so we stopped at the cafe first for some food before walking over to the castle (about a 5 minute walk from the cafe/car park)...

Where to find the best views in Cambridge

image from Where to find the best views in Cambridge

One of my favourite things to do when travelling to a new destination is to find the highest vantage point, however on my first visit to Cambridge I couldn’t find any obvious landmarks from which I could take in the views over the city. I paid a second visit to Cambridge back in July with my parents when they were visiting from Australia, and as we were walking past Kings College a sign outside Great St Mary’s Church caught our attention...

Day trips from London: Waddesdon Manor

While driving back to London from Cornwall we decided to stop by Waddesdon Manor. It wasn’t exactly on our route but I’d wanted to visit for a long time so I figured it was worth taking a little detour. Waddesdon Manor is located in the village of Waddesdon, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, so it can easily be visited on a day trip from London if you have your own wheels...

Cornwall Road Trip: Land's End and Minack Theatre

6 August 2016
image from Cornwall Road Trip: Land's End and Minack Theatre

For the first two nights of our Cornwall trip we decided to base ourselves in Penzance so we could explore the most southerly points of Cornwall with ease. Our first stop on the trip was Land’s End, the most westerly point of England, which was only a 15 minute drive from our Airbnb accommodation. Entry to Land’s End is free, however there is a small charge for parking and there are four interactive attractions on site (primarily aimed at children) that you can pay to visit...

Chillon Castle Day Trip from Geneva

Chillon Castle was a must-see for me during our recent trip to Gevena and despite the miserable weather I was determined to make it happen. Situated at the opposite end of Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is about an hour outside the city of Geneva but is easy to get via public transport. There are a few different routes you can take to get to the castle: Take a train from Geneva to Lausanne, then change trains to head to Veytaux-Chillon...
