Visiting Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace

31 March 2019

A visit to Schönbrunn Palace was top of my list of things to do when I visited Vienna last year. I had heard it was modelled after the French Versailles, and given how much I enjoyed my visit there, I was determined to visit its Austrian rival. Getting there The Palace was easy to get to via the Underground train network. Take the U4 line get off at Schönbrunn. From the train station it is roughly a 5 minute walk to the Palace entrance...

image from Review: Kempinski Hotel Adriatic Istria Croatia

After a couple of long days travelling by motorcyle from London to Croatia, we wanted somewhere to stay where we could relax and unwind before continuing on our journey. The prestigious Croatian five-star luxury seaside golf-and-spa resort, Kempinski Hotel Adriatic, looked like the perfect place for this so I booked us in for two-nights. The hotel is located in the Istria region of Croatia - the triangular peninsula in the northern Adriatic, close to the Italian border...

Visiting the world's largest cave castle - Predjama Castle, Slovenia

10 March 2019
image from Visiting the world's largest cave castle - Predjama Castle, Slovenia

After a disappointing visit to Postojna Cave, we hopped back on the motorcycle to head to Predjama Castle. Our timing was rather unfortunate, as the heavens opened up whilst we were en route and we got caught out in a heavy downpour and hail. Thankfully, the castle was only 15 minutes away and we managed to get there unscathed and quickly took shelter in a cafe next to the car park...

Postojna Cave – the biggest tourist trap in Slovenia?

image from Postojna Cave – the biggest tourist trap in Slovenia?

Predjama Castle was one of those places I first discovered via Instagram, and after seeing photos of this castle built within a cave mouth it was immediately added to my bucket list. When planning our visit we discovered that Predjama Castle is only a short drive away from Postojna Cave and you can purchase a combination ticket for both. A quick look at TripAdvisor showed positive reviews for Postojna Cave, and the photos on their website were impressive so we decided it would be worthwhile to visit both attractions...

Plitvice Lakes National Park Day Trip from Zadar

image from Plitvice Lakes National Park Day Trip from Zadar

I spent a few days in Zadar during the summer. While I was there I couldn’t resist the opportunity to tick off a bucket list item - a visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is possible to get to Plitvice Lakes from Zadar via public transport, but to save myself the trouble of figuring out the bus schedule I decided to join an organised day trip. I found an excursion through Viator which suited me perfectly...

Hiking to Ojstrica for the best views of Lake Bled

22 July 2018
image from Hiking to Ojstrica for the best views of Lake Bled

Our Airbnb hosts in Bled gave us some great recommendations on things to do during our stay, but a sunrise hike to Ojstrica was firmly my favourite. I’m not normally one to be out of bed before the sun but the 4am wake up call was worthwhile for a few reasons. Obviously the view in the morning light is breathtaking, but getting up there earlier allows you to beat the crowds and the summer heat...

A visit to Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels

17 June 2018
image from A visit to Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels

We had some unseasonably warm weather over the early May bank holiday weekend so we booked a last minute trip to Kent to visit Dover Castle. It had been on my English Heritage wishlist and I was keen to finally visit after a previous attempt had been thwarted by bad weather. We stayed overnight in Broadstairs and then made our way to the castle in the morning, although it is possible to visit Dover Castle on a day trip from London...

Exploring Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight

12 May 2018
image from Exploring Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight

Our first stop on the Isle of Wight was Carisbrooke Castle, located near the island’s capital, Newport. This castle has a rich history, having been an Elizabethan artillery fortress, a king’s prison and a royal summer residence. Upon arrival, the first thing we did was walk around the castle on the battlements. From here you can see across the island in all directions. The castle sits upon a hilltop dominating the centre of the island...

Osborne House - the family home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

After binge-watching ITV’s Victoria series over the Christmas break, I was captivated by the story of Queen Victoria and Price Albert. Through being an English Heritage member I’d heard of their family home on the Isle of Wight, Osborne House, but after learning more about the royal couple I was even more eager to visit. A brief history of Osborne House Victoria and Albert wanted a home where they could escape from the stresses of court life...

Visiting Chartwell, the home of Winston Churchill

7 April 2018

After recently watching the film Darkest Hour, and being enthralled by Netflix’s The Crown, I was inspired to pay a visit to Chartwell. This country house near Westerham in Kent was the home of Winston Churchill for over forty years. Winston and his wife Clementine had wanted a country house for years but they struggled financially. In 1921, he received an inheritance from a distant cousin which gave them a much-needed boost in funds...
